What an awesome group of patriots that are paying tribute to the fallen and raising awareness and money for the issues that veterans and first responders and their families often face. Check out their Facebook page and see if the relay may be coming close to you before they finish in Dallas on Memorial Day. Plenty of stations to consider out there but the Weatherflow Tempest fits the bill. No moving parts, wireless, latest tech for the sensors, simple set up, mobile app included, artificial intelligence driven, can feed data to Weather Underground, and an open API to integrate with other home automation devices. I have it mounted in a temporary location until I gather a few days worth of data. <div><br /></div><div>Check out my real time weather at <a href="https://tempestwx.com/station/42470/grid">https://tempestwx.com/station/42470/grid</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Check out Weatherflow at <a href="http://www.weatherflow.com">www.weatherflow.com</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; of the 5 officers were pilots. The other two were NFO’s (Naval Flight

<span style="color: black; font-size: 14.0pt;"> As the TACCO for Combat Aircrew Three, I was the youngest
officer in my squadron to hold that title, something for which I was quite proud.
All 5 officers on our crew were junior Officers (O-3 or below) which we liked
to think of as being without adult supervision - part of our bragging
rights. Being an all junior officer crew, we got a lot of the short
straws, like flying in the dead, dark of night when everybody else was back in
their warm racks sleeping.</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 14.0pt;">My story
concerns one of our night missions. We were flying north of Iceland searching
for a Soviet submarine off of the extreme northwest coast of Norway. We
were operating under the “Big Sky - Little Airplane” theory of maritime patrol
aviation, as we did nearly 100% of the time, under strict radio silence so that
the Russians couldn’t find us via radio transmissions. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 14.0pt;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Several hours into the mission, my radar
operator asked me to re-initialize (turn off/turn on) his ESM pod. I
asked him what the problem was and he told me that he had a constant contact
with the bearing of 180 degrees relative….(our six o’clock position). </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 14.0pt;">At first, I
didn’t think anything of it. But after his 3rd request to re-initialize, I
began to think that there was a more serious problem than equipment
failure. I got out of my seat and went into the cockpit to confer with
the pilot, our crew commander. After less than a minute of discussion we both
came to the same conclusion….WE HAD BEEN INTERCEPTED AND HAD A FIGHTER ESCORT
TRACKING US FROM BEHIND! </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 14.0pt;">The pilot immediately turned on
our aircraft’s exterior anti-collision and strobe lights and started

They learned that each had served in the late 1980's as aircrew members in their respective branches, Jeff in the Navy and Guy in the Air Force. As their conversation developed, they realized that they both served deployments at the same base, in the same alert facility, at the same time!! <div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: left;">
My friend Jerry McLaughlin has been spending his quarantine time sharing stories and excerpts for the last dozen years of restoring our B-17 Flying Fortress known as "City of Savannah". Many of the stories he has pulled directly from the book that he wrote chronicling the restoration. Jerry has recently broadened his daily stories to include recollections from many of the volunteers who spent time in the military. My contribution was published this week and really is an interesting story indeed. I hope you enjoy it.</div>

<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">Guy McDonald, the man who put together
the <i>City of Savannah</i> radio room,<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">
returned to the museum from his home in Atlanta in June of 2019 to crank up our
radios in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At the end of the day, General “Buck” Shuler,
a museum founder and ex-Commander of the Eighth Air Force, presented Guy with a
certificate of appreciation for traveling from Atlanta to help in the museum’s anniversary
activities.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It was amazing to all
concerned when Buck and Guy began to talk about their Air Force assignments and
learned that they had, in fact, flown as fellow crew members on many Looking
Glass 24-hour remote airborne command-post missions between 1987 and 1990.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Looking Glass missions provided an airborne emergency
back-up command and control system for the Strategic Air Command should SAC
headquarters be destroyed by an attack on the United States. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;">
<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">When Buck boarded
the EC-135C Looking Glass aircraft he had the very ominous title of <u>Airborne
Emergency Action Officer.</u> As the AEAO, his awesome responsibility, if a
nuclear attack were to be launched against the United States, and Strategic Air
Command HQ was unable to perform its duties, was to deliver a series of
messages to all SAC units as to what action to take, as he was directed by the
Commander-in-Chief, the President of the United States. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;">
<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">Guy’s job,
in another compartment of the EC-135C, was maintaining, troubleshooting and
repairing all on-board communications systems during the mission. It was his
job to ensure that General Shuler’s ultra-important communications equipment
worked if it was needed, a great deal of responsibility for a young NCO who had
to beat out many others for the job.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

themselves on the same crew once again, this time they are working

<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">The code name Looking Glass derived
from the program’s mission to "mirror" the command and control
functions of the underground command post at SAC headquarters located at Offutt
Air Force Base, Nebraska. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Looking Glass
aircraft were airborne 24 hours a day for over 29 years, from February 3, 1961,
until July 24, 1990. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;">
<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">Looking Glass was originally supplied
with five specially modified KC-135 aircraft from the 34th Air Refueling
Squadron based at Offutt. All EC-135 Looking Glass aircraft were equipped with an
Airborne Launch Control System capable of transmitting launch commands to U.S.
ground-based Intercontinental Ballistic Missile sites in the event that the
ground launch control centers were rendered inoperable. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;">
<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">In addition to the command
responsibility for transmitting the President’s orders to launch U.S.
retaliatory missiles, Looking Glass was also designed to help ensure continuity
and reconstitution of the U.S. government in the event of a nuclear attack on North
America. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify; text-indent: .5in;">
<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">Today the Looking Glass missions are
flown by Navy E6-B aircraft capable of flight for 72 hours without refueling
and with the ability to land on unconventional surfaces.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When on a Looking Glass mission the E6-B is
designated as ABNCP (Airborne Command Post) with the dual mission of providing
a communications relay platform for ballistic missile carrying U.S. Navy
submarines, as well as being the Airborne Launch Control System (ALCS) for the
United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) that operates from Offutt Air Force
Base, where the original Looking Glass missions began in 1961.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

What a blast it was! I took quite a few pics and some video clips which you can see below. We flew out of Gwinnett County Airport/Briscoe Field northeast of Atlanta. Beautiful day to fly as it was clear and about 80 degrees. Engine start, taxi, takeoff, flight time, landing, and taxi was around 30 minutes total. Just enough time to experience this incredible machine. You can see more info about the Tri-Motor at the EAA website. <br />

Members of the Cobb County ARES team deployed to Clay National Guard Center at Dobbins ARB in Marietta with the emcomm unit using call sign KK4OIO.<br />
<br />
We had the unit up and operational for VHF/UHF, DSTAR, and HF by 0900. We were able to erect the 40 and 80 meter NVIS HF antennas and the multiband vertical HF antennas and all systems worked well today.<br />
<br />
I had coordinated ahead of time with several operators down in Coastal Georgia near Savannah and Fort Stewart so that we could simulate moving traffic between the Guard units at Clay and at Fort Stewart. We were able to successfully make contact with several on HF voice and HF digital using PSK31. Made contact with NT4TH at the CRTC near Savannah International Airport, Dwight Biechler at the Liberty County EOC, and Tom Gillan in Savannah.<br />
<br />
Thanks to all who participated today and continuing to demonstrate to the Georgia Guard our extensive capabilities to provide reliable communications for them.<br />

This was taken on July 23, 2013 at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force during the annual reunion of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society. What a thrill it was to meet and talk with Mr. Peterson.<br />

Got to play on the aircraft as well as mingle with many brave airmen who flew these birds during WWII. <br />
<br />
It was a great day with fellow radio operators Bill DeLoach-K4WP, Mac McCormick-KF4LMT, and Peter Levesque-KJ4FAW. Appreciate their help in setting up, operating, and tearing down radio station WW2COS.<br />
<br />
Looking forward to the next activation perhaps on Sept 14th to celebrate the USAF birthday.<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WmJXH01OE8A/UT6o8u0DCuI/AAAAAAAACaE/h9dgJSA0bJo/s1600/IMAG3232.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WmJXH01OE8A/UT6o8u0DCuI/AAAAAAAACaE/h9dgJSA0bJo/s320/IMAG3232.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Ordered a SignaLink USB sound card from Tigertronics the other day so I can more easily run digital modes on the HF radio. I've been running digital on HF and VHF for quite a while now using the "acoustic coupling" method. Always worked fine but really a pain in the butt having to hand key the mic while holding up to the computer speaker. <br />
<br />
So the SignaLink arrived today and I finally got around to installing it this evening. Pretty simple really. Just opened the case and installed the jumper wires to match the pin out of the mic connector on my Kenwood TS-430. Put the case back on then connected the mic cable from the radio to the SignaLink, and then the USB cable from the computer to the SignaLink, then an audio cable from the radio speaker jack to the SignaLink and then an external speaker to the SignaLink AUX jack.<br />
<br />
Next, I configured the audio settings on the computer and then on the FLDGI digital program that I use. <br />
<br />
Time for the smoke test. I turned on the unit and audio was passing thru the SignaLink just fine. Good receive out of the gate. Next to test the transmit side and be sure that the FLDIGI program would key the radio and pass audio tones. Almost perfect the first time! Just a slight adjustment on the TX Level knob to lower mic gain and as a result the transmit power out. <br />
<br />
This unit will be a great complement to the radio station.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Members of the Cobb County and Chatham County ARES programs
participated in Operation Patriot Redbird II on March 3rd at Clay National
Guard Center on Dobbins ARB. This communications exercise was the second
such drill where Georgia ARES teams were requested to work alongside Georgia
National Guard and Georgia State Defense Forces to demonstrate communications
capabilities between two major military facilities in the state. The Cobb
County team of Dawn Humphries-KI5EV, Tony Gaito-KC0CSG, Ernie Braxton-KJ4VUX,
Chris Loftus-KK4LZW, and Guy McDonald-K4GTM arrived at Clay National Guard
Center on Sunday morning as the snow flurries fell in the 30 degree air.
Unusual weather for March in Atlanta! The team had the Cobb ARES
comm trailer set up and operational well ahead of schedule. During set up
and testing it was noted that the 80 meter NVIS antenna arrangement was
presenting a very high SWR. Tony put the antenna analyzer inline and
determined that we had an issue with the balun or the antenna itself. Fortunately
the unit also has a multiband vertical HF antenna which tuned up just fine.
Tony performed comm checks with the VHF and UHF radios on the local
designated repeater frequencies. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I had coordinated
ahead of time for members of the Chatham County ARES program to participate
with us near the military installations of Hunter Army Airfield and Fort
Stewart. The team consisted of Paul Ecker-KC2NYU, Greg Tillman-N4VAD, and
Mark Bolton-KA4CID. Just before 1000, using the new Cobb ARES call sign
of KK4OIO, we established voice contact with all three stations on 7.268 MHz.
Plenty of noise on the band but with headsets and a little tweaking of
the "nerd knobs" on the Kenwood TS-480, we were able to maintain
solid voice contact throughout the drill. The vertical antenna was not as
ideal as the NVIS antenna might have been but the path between Marietta and
Savannah held for the full duration of the exercise. Around 1100 we
decided to try to establish a digital data link between the two locations.
We stayed on 7.268 MHz, changed the mode to USB, turned the power down to
20 watts, opened the DM-780 digital program on the station computer, selected
PSK-31 as our protocol and typed the first message from KK4OIO to KC2NYU.
Paul, in the Savannah area near Hunter Army Airfield acknowledged our
message right away and gave us a 599 signal report. Paul’s signal was
booming in and the digital traffic was solid copy. We sent several test
messages and practiced for the better part of an hour. Signals were so
strong that we even backed the output power down to 5 watts and held solid
contact between the two stations. We also established digital data
contact with Cobb County ARES member, Randy DeLuco-K4JTT in Woodstock.
Randy was also able to communicate with Paul in Savannah from his
location in Woodstock. We wrapped up the digital comm just before noon
and Paul, Greg, and Mark signed off. Sure appreciate those guys working
with us.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Things couldn't
have gone better from a communications objectives perspective. We once
again were able to show how quickly an ARES team can set up a fully functional,
multiband, multimode, radio station and communicate with other units in the
state. We also had the opportunity to brief several groups of officers of
the National Guard and State Defense Force about the capabilities that we are
able to bring to our served agencies. Everyone seemed very impressed with
the ARES program, our capabilities, and our commitment to public service thru
amateur radio. We are building some great credibility and more
importantly some great relationships with the National Guard and the State
Defense Force. The next commex is being planned for some time in May and
we've been asked to participate again and perhaps even broaden the drill to
several other facilities across the state. We'll start planning as soon
as we have the details!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Just after noon,
LTC. Boan and LTC. Olive invited us to join them for chow with the other
soldiers in the unit. It's was great to get out of the cold and have a
nice meal. Well, it was chow hall food but hey the lasagna was tasty and
the soup was nice and hot! After chow, we got a brief tour of the Joint
Operation Center (JOC). Then back outside to break down the unit and pack
everything away. We had everything stowed and we all departed around
1300. Great exercise and great job by the Cobb and Chatham County ARES
teams.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Of course the only member of his family that would appreciate these is me! So I have a nice inventory of tubes now to use on future restoration projects or to share with some of my ham radio friends.<br />

We had an absolutely great day at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum today operating our radio station WW2COS to celebrate Armed Forces Day. I always look forward to these opportunities to raise awareness of our B-17 restoration project. We set some records this time around in several areas. Before the event we posted info about our upcoming activity at <a href="http://www.qrz.com/">http://www.qrz.com/</a> and we had 480 hits. That means 480 people saw information about the project before we even started today. Over the course of about 7 hours on the radio today we made contact with 54 stations in 17 states and one Canadian province. Two of those stations were also operating special event stations to celebrate Armed Forces Day. With each contact we took the opportunity to explain the details of the "City of Savannah" story and specifically the radio compartment. During the event today we also leveraged Facebook and Twitter to update our status and frequency. Once again we broadcasted a live video feed from the compartment so that folks all across the country could watch us and get a view of the inside of the aircraft. I wrote a message that scolled across the screen showing our current operating frequency. This is always a big hit and this time we had a record 50 people view the video feed. That's 50 people "virtually" inside the radio compartment with us enjoying this great piece of history!<br />
<br />
Todays radio operators included myself, K4GTM, Bill-K4WP, Greg-W5GKB, Peter-KJ4FAW, and Paul-KC2NYU. What a great time we had. Big thanks to Jeff Hoopes for having the aircraft electrical ready for us and to Gil and Justin for thier work on the QSL card board.<br />
<br />
**BONUS** We had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with a B-17 radio operator who was visiting the museum today with some family members. Didn't get his name but he's visited the museum several times.<br />

Spent a little time at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum this morning doing some planning for upcoming activities in the radio compartment of our B-17. Also got a chance to spend some time with my friend Jeff who has been working on getting the landing lights operational. Jeff and team have done a great job on the electrical system and have great plans to make alot of the moving parts, well move. Todays efforts were centered around re-doing some wiring and installing some relays to light the landing lights. Here's a few pictures.<br />
